On November 10, 2025, popular R&B artist Akon was arrested in the Atlanta suburb of Chamblee, Georgia. Police records show Akon, whose legal name is Aliaune Thiam, was taken into custody after failing to appear in court for a previous ticket for driving with a suspended license.
The incident occurred when police responded to a call about a disabled Tesla Cybertruck on a busy street. While waiting for a tow truck, the officer checked Akon's license plate and found he had no valid auto insurance and a suspended driver's license due to a missed court hearing in January 2023. Police then impounded the vehicle and cited Akon for driving without a valid license, seizing the license he was carrying.
Akon, who was born in the United States to Senegalese parents, rose to fame in the early 2000s with hits like "Smack That" and "I Wanna Love You." The Grammy-nominated singer has also been active in philanthropic ventures in Africa. However, his latest legal troubles stem from his failure to address a previous traffic violation, leading to his arrest last week.
Akon was booked into the DeKalb County jail and later transferred to another facility, where he posted bail and was released the same day. Representatives for the artist have not yet responded to requests for comment.
