A significant Iron Age artifact, a near-complete battle trumpet called a carnyx, has been discovered in Norfolk, England. This rare bronze instrument, featuring an animal head, is one of only three known examples found in Britain and is considered one of the most complete discovered in Europe.
Archaeologists unearthed the carnyx during an excavation, and it is potentially linked to the Iceni tribe, famously led by Queen Boudica in her revolt against the Romans. While direct attribution to Boudica is impossible, the artifact originates from the same Iron Age landscape associated with her people.
In addition to the trumpet, the find includes a sheet-bronze boar's head, five shield bosses, and an unidentified iron object. These discoveries offer a valuable opportunity to study rare artifacts and understand their burial context from 2,000 years ago.
The artifacts are in a fragile condition and require extensive conservation before detailed research can commence. The legal status of the hoard will be determined by the coroner in early 2026, which will guide future handling and study of these important historical items.
