On November 9, 2025, Harlem rapper Max B was released from prison after serving 16 years for his involvement in a fatal armed robbery. The rapper, whose real name is Charley Wingate, had been sentenced to 75 years in prison in 2009 but saw his sentence reduced to 20 years in 2016 after a new legal team argued that his original trial lawyer had a conflict of interest.
Prior to his 2007 arrest, Max B had released a string of popular mixtapes and helped popularize the term "wavy." While incarcerated, he continued to release new music, often recording his verses over the phone. In 2019, he reunited with frequent collaborator French Montana for the track "Hold On," his first new song in eight years.
Shortly after his release, Max B hinted at more new music to come, writing on social media: "ITS TIME TO OPEN THE FLOOD GATES 🌊🌊🌊 SEE YALL IN A FEW." Fans of the rapper, who was not present during the fatal robbery, have eagerly awaited his return to the music scene.
