According to a report from November 2025, Bollywood actor Ranvir Shorey has provided a frank assessment of the 2009 film Chandni Chowk to China, in which he starred. In a conversation last month, Shorey revealed that the script for the movie was significantly better than the final product that audiences saw.
Discussing the discrepancy between the written material and the on-screen result, Shorey stated that the responsibility lies with the film's producers and directors. He explained that when a script is strong but the resulting movie fails to meet that standard, the mistake lies with the creative team in charge of the production.
Chandni Chowk to China, a martial arts action-comedy directed by Nikkhil Advani, was a major experiment that featured a large ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, and Hong Kong actor Gordon Liu. However, the film struggled both critically and commercially upon its release. Critics found issues with the script and pacing, and audiences seemed to agree, as the Rs. 65 crore production only managed to collect Rs. 53.45 crore at the box office.
The film also sparked controversy in Nepal over a line about Buddha's birthplace, leading to a ban there. Ultimately, Shorey's assessment suggests that the creative team behind Chandni Chowk to China was unable to fully realize the potential of the original script, resulting in a disappointing final product.
