15 Years of Theatre, 4 Days to Film: An Actor's Leap

Ranjana Aanjjan has transitioned from a 15-year career in theatre to screen acting with the film 'Chand Tara.' The project's trailer recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, marking a significant milestone for the actress. Aanjjan's journey into films was expedited, with only four days to prepare for her role, including mastering a Hyderabadi Urdu accent and adapting to period drama nuances.

Her move to screen acting was prompted by the pandemic's impact on theatre. Aanjjan, who was deeply involved in all aspects of stage productions, found herself in an identity crisis when theatre performances ceased. This led her to pursue screen opportunities, eventually landing roles in an OTT project and 'Chand Tara.' She emphasizes the distinct grammar of screen acting compared to theatre.

The film 'Chand Tara' holds heritage value, being backed by Telangana Tourism and centered on the story of Taramati. Despite the prestige of the Cannes screening, Aanjjan and the crew approached the film with a focus on storytelling and performance, much like a theatre production. Her father, veteran actor Aanjjan Srivastav, has been a constant source of support, advising patience and confidence throughout her career.

Guided by her director to treat the film like a play, Aanjjan drew upon her extensive theatre experience. She also learned valuable lessons from veteran actors like Mohan Agashe. Aanjjan’s professional background as a graphic designer, a skill her father encouraged, provided a crucial backup during her career transition.
