James 'Bo' Gritz, a highly decorated Vietnam War veteran whose life reportedly inspired the Rambo film franchise, has died at the age of 87. Gritz, a former Army Special Forces lieutenant colonel, passed away on Friday.
Born in Oklahoma in 1939, Gritz served with the Green Berets. He later ran as a populist candidate for president in 1992.
That same year, Gritz became involved in the infamous Ruby Ridge standoff in Northern Idaho. He is credited with negotiating the surrender of Randy Weaver after Weaver's wife and son were killed.
Gritz remained an advocate for constitutional rights. He also shared anti-government and survivalist views on radio programs. He denied allegations of racism linked to the Christian Identity movement. Gritz had been facing health struggles, including cancer, prior to his death.
