Filmmaker Ashwath Marimuthu is rumored to be the chosen director for Rajinikanth's highly anticipated film, tentatively titled Thalaivar 173. The project is backed by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International (RKFI). Renewed speculation about Marimuthu's involvement emerged after RKFI posted a special birthday video for him.
This project has seen considerable director changes. Initially, Sundar C was announced but withdrew due to overwhelming pressure. Later, Cibi Chakravarthi was brought on board, with a first look released. However, subsequent lack of updates led to rumors of his departure as well.
Marimuthu previously shared that he had narrated a script to Rajinikanth, which the superstar reportedly found extraordinary, praising its villain characterization. Although a directorial opportunity did not materialize then, Marimuthu expressed confidence it would happen in the future.
It remains uncertain if Marimuthu's other announced project, STR 51, a fantasy rom-com, will be completed before Thalaivar 173, should his association with the Rajinikanth film be officially confirmed. Production for STR 51 is expected to commence after another film, Arasan.
