6 Mar
Summary
- Rajinikanth initially refused 'Andhaa Kaanoon' offer.
- He doubted his Hindi suitability and star power.
- Distributors questioned his appeal post-release.

Superstar Rajinikanth recently shared his surprising reluctance to accept the Hindi film 'Andhaa Kaanoon' in 1983. Speaking at the inauguration of Greenpark Resort & Spa in Madikeri, Karnataka, he revealed that producer Atluri Purnachandra Rao, who introduced him to Hindi cinema, had to persuade him extensively. Rajinikanth initially declined, doubting his Hindi proficiency and his ability to succeed in the Hindi film industry, especially with Amitabh Bachchan slated for a guest role. He felt the offer was exaggerated until concrete details, including co-stars like Hema Malini and Pran, were confirmed.
Despite eventually agreeing to the film, its reception from distributors was initially bleak, with them questioning Rajinikanth's star appeal. Undeterred, producer Purnachandra Rao took on the distribution himself. The film, 'Andhaa Kaanoon', went on to become a colossal success, defying the distributors' initial doubts and solidifying Rajinikanth's pan-India presence. The event also celebrated the 90th birthday of producer Atluri Purnachandra Rao, who had previously introduced Rajinikanth to Hindi cinema.
