In a recent video celebrating his five decades in cinema, Rajinikanth discussed the casting process for his hit film Padayappa. He disclosed that Aishwarya Rai was the first choice for the formidable Neelambari character, a role he felt required a specific intensity in the eyes. However, after she declined, Ramya Krishnan was eventually chosen, delivering a performance that has become legendary.
Rajinikanth also detailed the genesis of the Neelambari character, inspired by a figure from Kalki's novel Ponniyin Selvan. He recounted how, after the film's release, a special screening was arranged for former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa due to speculation that the character was based on her. He later heard she enjoyed the film.
The film, released in 1999, was a significant achievement, with its entire production completed in just 70 days, a testament to the efficient direction and management. Padayappa is now slated for a re-release on December 12, coinciding with Rajinikanth's 75th birthday, adding to the actor's year-long celebration of his golden jubilee in the film industry.
