Raja's Love Story: Royal Scandal & Melbourne Marriage

A Raja Ravi Varma portrait of Raja Martanda Bhairava Tondaiman, dating back nearly 150 years, is set to be auctioned, bringing his remarkable story to light. The painting, known as the 'Little Prince of Courage,' has a starting bid of Rs 20 crore. Martanda, who ascended the throne of Pudukkottai in 1886, was a progressive ruler, introducing modern amenities like electricity and establishing civic infrastructure.

His life took a significant turn in 1915 when he married Esme Mary Sorrett Fink from Melbourne. Despite a warm reception from his people, the British refused to recognize the union. The couple faced adversity, including an alleged poisoning attempt on Molly and denial of property ownership, prompting their departure from India.

Facing a future where his son Sydney would not be recognized as heir, Martanda abdicated his throne. His grand-nephew succeeded him as the dynasty's last ruler. The Tondaiman dynasty was distinguished by its early democratic governance, legislative assemblies, and social welfare initiatives, even creating a scheme akin to MGNREGA.

The final ruler of Pudukkottai joined the Indian Union, contributing the entire royal treasury. The 'Little Prince of Courage' portrait, created when Martanda was just 10, highlights his ceremonial weight as a child ruler, captured with unique artistic strokes that blend Indian regalia with European influences, like a prominent clock symbolizing modernity.
