Queer Drama 'The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo' Wins Big, Heads to North America

In a significant achievement, Diego Céspedes' directorial debut, "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo," has been selected as Chile's Oscar entry for Best International Feature. The film, which premiered earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard award, has now been acquired by the LGBTQ film distributor Altered Innocence.

Altered Innocence founder Frank Jaffe praised the film, stating that Céspedes has "crafted one of the most original and moving debuts" he has seen in years. "The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo" is described as a "haunting allegory about fear and visibility" that feels both timeless and urgent. Audiences in North America will have the opportunity to discover the film, as Altered Innocence plans to release it theatrically in late 2025.

The film's logline reveals that it follows 11-year-old Lidia, who lives with her beloved queer family in a desert mining town in northern Chile. As an unknown and deadly disease begins to spread, a legend suggests it is transmitted between two men through a simple glance when they fall in love. Lidia must navigate this situation and determine whether the myth is real or not.
