Broadway's Queen of Versailles Cuts Final Performance Short

Kristin Chenoweth's Broadway production of The Queen of Versailles has announced an earlier than anticipated closing date. The musical, which began previews in October and opened in November, will now take its final bow on December 21, 2025, moving up from its previously scheduled final performance on January 4, 2026. This accelerated closure comes merely two weeks after the initial announcement that the show's run would be shortened.

The decision to close early appears to stem from notably negative reviews following the show's opening. Despite these critical responses, The Queen of Versailles had been performing well financially, reportedly grossing over $1 million each week after its opening. This financial success contrasts sharply with the substantial loss expected, given the production's estimated capitalization cost of $22.5 million.

Chenoweth, who stars in and produces the musical, has expressed pride in the created artwork while acknowledging the challenges of Broadway productions. She shared a heartfelt video reacting to the news, emphasizing the value of live theater and encouraging audiences to support all Broadway shows. The musical itself is based on Lauren Greenfield's 2012 documentary, chronicling the Siegel family's attempt to build a Versailles-inspired mansion amid the 2008 financial crisis.
