Pune's Grand Ganapati Visarjan: Faith Meets Spectacle

On Friday, Pune's old city areas will experience a profound shift as grand Ganapati visarjan processions commence. The main procession is scheduled to start around 9 am, prominently featuring the five revered Manache Ganapati in their traditional order: Kasba Ganapati, Tambdi Jogeshwari, Guruji Talim, Tulshibaug, and Kesariwada. These processions will traverse through the heart of the old city, including Laxmi Road and Tilak Road, culminating at the immersion ghats. Following this, the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganapati procession will begin its carefully orchestrated journey around 4 pm. A highlight of this procession will be the artistic Vakratunda Rath, standing 21 feet tall and adorned with idols of Lord Krishna and Kubera. Alongside this spectacle, a significant anti-drug campaign, Manav Seva Rath, will convey a message against substance abuse and excessive screen dependency, particularly to the youth. In a notable change, over 700 mandals have committed to reducing high-decibel sound systems, leading to a revival of traditional dhol-tasha performances. Approximately 170 dhol-tasha troupes are expected to participate. The Bombay High Court's ban on metal gas cylinders struck with hammers as musical instruments will also be strictly enforced. While the main processions draw large crowds, many housing societies and neighborhoods will observe more intimate visarjan rituals. Families are preparing for personal farewells, with some opting for artificial immersion tanks. The city anticipates a day filled with devotion, cultural performances, and a unique blend of tradition and social awareness.
