23 Aug
Summary
- Hidden pineapples are a recurring Easter egg in the 'Psych' series and movies.
- The running gag began with an improvised line by star James Roday Rodriguez.
- Creator Steve Franks embraced the gag due to Rodriguez's comedic delivery.

Fans of the popular series "Psych" will be delighted to know that pineapples are deliberately hidden in nearly every episode and film. This quirky running gag has become an iconic element of the show, with its origins tracing back to an improvised moment in the very first episode.
During the series premiere, which aired on July 7, 2006, star James Roday Rodriguez, who portrayed Shawn Spencer, noticed a prop pineapple. In a scene with his co-star Dulé Hill, who plays Burton "Gus" Guster, Rodriguez spontaneously asked, "Should I slice this up for the road?" This off-the-cuff remark, delivered with comedic brilliance, caught the attention of show creator Steve Franks.
Franks found Rodriguez's improvisation so amusing that he felt compelled to incorporate the pineapple into the series. "Every time he got to that pineapple part, he sold it in such a way that it was the most acting he did the entire day," Franks recalled. This initial humorous moment allowed the pineapple to evolve into a full-fledged running gag, adding a unique layer of charm to "Psych."
