19 Feb
Summary
- Directors explored 12 unique viewing formats for their film.
- They highlighted the immersive motion and sound of D-Box.
- Filmmakers emphasized shared cinematic experiences in theaters.

Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller recently embarked on a cinematic tour, experiencing firsthand the diverse formats available for their film, Project Hail Mary. In a promotional clip released earlier this week, the pair visited various Los Angeles theaters to showcase the film's multiple viewing options. They detailed that the movie can be seen in 12 distinct formats, including Imax, Dolby Cinema, Screenx, HDR by Barco, D-Box, 4DX, MX4D, and standard presentations.
Lord and Miller expressed particular excitement for the Imax 1:43 aspect ratio, noting it was the format for which the film was designed. They shared that the digital footage was processed through a film-out technique, similar to that used for 'Dune,' to imbue the film with a unique warmth. Miller described the D-Box experience as a completely immersive ride, with seats synchronized to move and rumble, accentuating the on-screen action.
Beyond advanced technologies, the directors also championed the classic cinema experience. Visiting a local independent theater, they reflected on the magic of watching movies with a large audience. Lord emphasized the unifying power of shared laughter and emotions, regardless of the viewing format. Miller concluded by encouraging audiences to experience the film together in any available format, highlighting the importance of communal movie-going.
