Filmmaker Priyadarshan has responded to the disappointing box office performance of his recent film, 'Haiwaan'. Despite the thriller's underwhelming run since its September 11 release, the director remains resilient, stating that 48 years and 98 films have taught him to accept both hits and flops as part of the filmmaking process.
Priyadarshan suggested that the film's reception has reinforced his belief that Hindi audiences primarily perceive him as a comedy director, a perception solidified after his 2000 hit, 'Hera Pheri'. He pointed to his extensive portfolio of serious films, including 'Kaalapani' (1996) and 'Kanchivaram' (2008), as evidence of his versatility, noting their success, particularly in the South Indian film industry.
'Haiwaan' itself is a remake of Priyadarshan's own 2016 Malayalam film 'Oppam'. The Hindi version features Saif Ali Khan as a visually impaired man targeted by a killer, played by Akshay Kumar, and also stars Boman Irani and Shriya Pilgaonkar. The movie has reportedly earned Rs 9.92 crore net in India.
