A newly revealed letter indicates that Princess Diana harbored a deep dislike for London during her marriage to King Charles. The correspondence, written shortly after their 1981 wedding, expresses Diana's preference for the "endless sun" and "calm seas" experienced on a cruise aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. She described enjoying outdoor activities in Scotland, stating "I adore being outside all day & hate London!"
Despite her aversion to the city, Diana established her primary residence with Charles at Kensington Palace in London. She later personalized her apartments there, transforming them into a vibrant space for her sons, Princes William and Harry. Even after separating from Charles in 1992, she continued to use the Kensington Palace residence as her base.
Following her untimely death in 1997, Diana's Kensington Palace apartments remained unoccupied for a decade. Subsequent renovations, initially estimated at £250,000, significantly increased to £524,000 due to essential repairs to the property's heating system. The refurbishment work was scheduled for completion in 2012.
The letter also provided insight into Diana's adaptation to married life, describing it as "wonderful" and a learning experience in "playing with grown ups." The collection containing this letter, along with school photographs, is slated for auction.
