Estonia's Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a historic first: its inaugural visual identity. Legendary Estonian cartoonist and animation filmmaker Priit Pärn was selected for this significant task. Pärn decided to feature the "Kilplased," characters from Estonian folklore known for being foolish yet resourceful, depicted as they make a film.
This unique choice ensures an original and distinctive look for the festival, which runs from November 6-22. The Kilplased's appearance on advertisements and decorations is intended to introduce new traditions as PÖFF enters its next decade. The festival aims to present artistically ambitious concepts annually, providing a platform for Estonian artists.
Pärn, who has depicted the Kilplased since 1974, collaborated with creative agency AD Angels. He described the process as swift, taking only five minutes to decide on the Kilplased after the requirement for originality was set. The resulting poster is intended to evoke cheerfulness and serve as a vibrant visual element during the darker November days.
