In Prayagraj, the Durga Puja festival in 2026 sees four historic Barwaris—Colonelganj, Indian Girls' (City), Attarsuyia, and Lukerganj—continuing a legacy of traditional worship.
The Colonelganj Barwari, established formally in 1853, is observing its 174th Durga Puja. This oldest community puja committee in the city began as a communal event after being celebrated in individual homes. Its venue has moved over the decades, now situated opposite Anand Bhawan.
The Indian Girls' (City) Barwari, over 142 years old, maintains a distinct traditional puja with a focus on heritage, including its unique dhuni dance. Attarsuyia Barwari, founded in 1882 and now in its 144th year, emphasizes social themes through handmade decorations.
This year, Bai Ka Bagh Barwari commemorates its centenary with a grand Kerala-inspired pandal replicating the Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple. The Lukerganj Barwari, reflecting the area's Bengali heritage, remains a hub for various cultural programs beyond Durga and Lakshmi Pujas.
