Chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' filled Prayagraj on Friday as devotees immersed Lord Ganesh idols, concluding 10 days of worship. Hundreds braved continuous rain to participate in the emotional farewell ceremonies.
The main immersion site was the Andhawa pond, where approximately 300 idols of varying sizes were submerged amidst prayers. Smaller idols were also immersed in the Yamuna and Ganga rivers.
Processions filled the streets leading to Andhawa, with devotees of all ages singing and dancing. The celebrations, popular in Maharashtra and other regions, were enhanced by the application of gulal.
A significant aspect this year was the widespread use of eco-friendly clay idols. Dr. Sandeep Singh highlighted this practice as crucial for protecting water bodies from harmful materials often found in POP idols.
The immersion events took place under unusual weather patterns, influenced by a deep depression over the Bay of Bengal. Overcast conditions, rain, and cool winds characterized the day, adding a unique backdrop to the festivities.
