Prada Film Fund Fuels Global Indie Cinema
8 Sep
Summary
- Fondazione Prada launched its film fund last year.
- The fund supports independent cinema worldwide without restrictions.
- It has backed 14 diverse projects, with more to be announced.

Last year, Fondazione Prada initiated a global film fund at the Venice Film Festival, dedicated to supporting independent cinema without thematic, genre, or language constraints. The fund's first year has yielded tangible results, with its support evident in "The Difficult Bride," a Bangladeshi film competing in the Venice Film Festival's Horizons section. This initiative has garnered substantial industry interest, attracting approximately 1,200 project applications in a short period.
Paolo Moretti, who manages the fund, expressed pleasant surprise at the rapid establishment of industry communication and the volume of submissions. The fund's unique format resonated immediately, showcasing the vitality of contemporary cinema. Initially planning to support 12 projects, the fund expanded to 14 due to flexible resource allocation and a desire to support more groundbreaking cinema.
Budgets for supported films typically range from a few hundred thousand euros up to five million euros, aligning with the production scale of experimental arthouse cinema. However, the fund remains open to exceptional projects that may fall outside this range if they strongly resonate with its spirit. The current budget is €1.5 million, with prospects for an increase due to demonstrated need.
Winners for the fund's second round of financing are slated for announcement in February. Plans are underway to refine the submission process, potentially separating projects based on their production phase—development, production, or post-production—to better balance support across different stages of filmmaking.
