The Alabama Center for the Arts is buzzing with activity as dozens of young actors, aged 8 to 18, participate in a vibrant performing arts camp. This intensive two-week program, running through July 31, culminates in a performance of Disney's "Mary Poppins Jr."
The camp, a collaboration between the ACA and Calhoun Community College, offers more than just rehearsals. Students explore theatrical concepts, including different stage types and the historical Greek chorus, integrating learning moments into the creative process. They also engage in hands-on activities like prop making and costume selection.
Participants are experiencing significant personal growth. Fourteen-year-old Karlianne Holcomb noted learning to overcome shyness and connect with new people, alongside developing vocal techniques that enhance projection and confidence. Twelve-year-old Luke Doepel highlighted the camp's focus on genuine acting skills and the value of its two-week intensive format for developing efficiency.
This summer program has seen remarkable growth, expanding from just six students in its inaugural year to 35 this year, reflecting a burgeoning interest in performing arts education. The sense of community is a significant draw, with campers appreciating the supportive and friendly environment. Eleven-year-old Laura Tucker found the fast-paced learning, especially memorizing lines and dance steps, a rewarding challenge, and discovered a new skill in harmonizing.
