Pop Star Sam Smith Reveals Liposuction Struggle at 13

In November 2025, pop singer Sam Smith candidly discussed their experience with liposuction at the young age of 13. Prior to this procedure, Smith had struggled with bullying and feeling self-conscious about their appearance, which they say "was crippling everything" about them.

Smith's parents were "hugely supportive" of the liposuction, which was intended to address Smith's "growing chest" that had led to relentless teasing at school. However, the surgery did not have the desired effect, as Smith ended up wearing the required bandage for nearly a year simply to get to the front of the lunch line faster.

Now, several years later, Smith has grown much more comfortable in their own skin. They first opened up about the liposuction in 2019, five years after their debut album catapulted them to international stardom. More recently, in 2023, Smith helped make Grammys history by winning the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance award with German pop star Kim Petras, making Petras the first openly transgender winner in the ceremony's history.
