A chance encounter with Marfa, Texas, the filming location for the iconic movie "Giant," profoundly inspired playwright Graczyk. This experience, coupled with the decline of traditional five-and-dime stores, fueled his desire to write.
Graczyk described his celebrated play as an exploration of progress that overlooks the past, the need for personal pride, and people's tendency to build facades. The play premiered in Columbus, Ohio, in September 1976, before moving to Broadway in 1980.
Despite a short Broadway run in 1982, the play garnered critical acclaim. Director Robert Altman filmed it with the original cast that same year. The film earned accolades, including the Gold Hugo at the 18th Chicago International Film Festival.
Cher received Golden Globe and LA Film Critics award nominations for her role as a devoted fan. The playwright also authored other works, including "A Murder of Crows" and "My Time Ain't Long." A musical adaptation of "Jimmy Dean" had its world premiere in June 2025 at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley.
