Sony Ends PS Discs: Games Go Digital in 2028

Sony has announced a significant shift in its gaming distribution strategy, declaring an end to new PlayStation game disc releases in January 2028. Following this date, all new titles will be exclusively available through the PlayStation Store in digital formats, or via download codes obtained from retailers. This decision comes amidst growing anticipation for the entirely digital release of Grand Theft Auto VI, a highly anticipated title that has already sparked discussion about the absence of a physical disc and its impact on the secondhand market.

The company cited a clear adaptation to consumer preferences, noting that digital media's popularity has significantly surpassed physical discs. This trend is supported by data showing a dramatic increase in digital game sales, rising from 13% at the PlayStation 4's launch in 2013 to nearly 80% in 2025. This move also suggests that future consoles, such as the anticipated PlayStation 6, will likely be digital-only.
