Women's Untold Stories: A Play Explores Eclipsed Lives

Sandhya Gokhale's new play, "Silhouettes," addresses the persistent issue of women creators being overlooked despite their achievements. Gokhale was moved to create the play after encountering the story of Lou Andreas-Salomé, a renowned psychoanalyst whose legacy was overshadowed by her associations with famous men.

The play delves into the contemporary lives of three women, examining the subtle influences of gender, power, and societal norms on their identities and decisions. This theme resonates with the evolving perspectives of the younger generation, including Gen Z, whose outlook Gokhale acknowledges has shaped her own understanding.

Both Gokhale and presenter Amol Palekar express reservations about trends like vertical filming and the proliferation of short-form content, arguing it undermines artistic depth. They also voice concerns about artificial intelligence encroaching into creative fields, finding its application in music and art disheartening.

Palekar, a vocal critic of censorship, remains engaged in ongoing legal battles against pre-censorship of plays and films in Maharashtra. He advocates for countering objectionable content with alternative viewpoints rather than outright bans, emphasizing that the pursuit of creative freedom requires continuous advocacy.
