7 Mar
Summary
- Pixar's 'Elio' film underwent a significant overhaul, removing LGBTQ+ elements.
- Creative chief Pete Docter cited concerns about exposing young audiences.
- The film failed early screenings, prompting drastic changes and a director change.

Pixar's chief creative officer, Pete Docter, revealed that the studio decided to remove LGBTQ+ storylines from the 2025 film 'Elio.' Docter explained that the decision was made to protect the young audience from topics they might not be ready for or haven't discussed with parents. This move comes after early test screenings showed that audiences were not receptive to the film.
As a result of the poor test performance, a complete overhaul of 'Elio' was initiated, even though animation was substantially complete. This overhaul led to the departure of the original director, Adrian Molina. The new directors, Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, made significant changes, including excising elements that indicated the main character was gay, such as a pink bike and a scene involving a male crush. These alterations sparked internal dissent among Pixar staff, further intensified by Disney's earlier decision to remove a transgender character from the animated series 'Win or Lose.'
Despite these creative shifts, 'Elio' ultimately grossed $150 million worldwide upon its June 2025 release. However, this figure only matched its production budget of $150 million, not accounting for substantial global marketing expenses, indicating a financial underperformance.
