Hazelnut Media has acquired international rights for the Bengali feature film "Pinjar," directed by Dr. Rudrajit Roy. The production company will promote the film's theatrical release in Indian theaters starting July 10 with an initiative supporting girls' education in rural West Bengal.
"Pinjar," meaning "The Cage," tells the story of five individuals whose lives are intertwined by their inability to break free from societal and personal boundaries. A central motif is a caged wild bird, symbolizing the characters' shared longing for liberation.
The ensemble cast includes notable actors, with music by Ratul Shankar. The film has garnered international attention, premiering at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival in 2025 and screening at numerous other festivals worldwide, earning Roy a special jury mention for best director.
Director Rudrajit Roy, who is also a practicing physician, developed the film after extensive fieldwork. Hazelnut Media plans a global rollout beyond India, targeting South and Southeast Asia, as well as diaspora markets, leveraging the co-CEOs' extensive distribution experience.
The film's connection to education for girls is deeply affirming for the production team, aligning with the core message of overcoming confinement and achieving freedom. The international release aims to not only resonate with audiences but also generate real-world positive change.
