Pierce Brosnan Flees Malibu: Wildfires, Costs Drive Exit

Actor Pierce Brosnan, 73, and his wife Keely Shaye Smith, 62, are preparing to leave their extensive Malibu estate after 26 years. The decision is driven by repeated wildfire threats, the considerable expense of maintaining the property, and a perceived shift in life in California. Brosnan expressed that while fortunate to have escaped wildfires thus far, it is time for a change.

Living in an area vulnerable to earthquakes and wildfires has created anxiety for the couple. Their Broad Beach compound faced significant wildfire danger during the January 2025 Los Angeles fires, an event that also impacted other celebrity homes. Brosnan's property itself experienced an estimated $1 million in damage from a garage fire in 2015.

Brosnan acquired the two adjoining properties in 2000 for $7.35 million, creating a Southeast Asian-inspired estate spanning over an acre. The compound includes two residences with a total of five bedrooms and 14 bathrooms, featuring amenities like a private theatre, wine cellar, gym, music room, and a spa.

The financial pressures of owning such a property have also influenced the decision. Brosnan admitted to taking acting roles to cover mortgage and school fees, stating there were times the financial situation was precarious. The couple had previously listed the estate for rent in 2004 and attempted a sale in 2021, but withdrew it.

Brosnan's focus is increasingly shifting towards their home in Kauai, Hawaii. He also highlighted his commitment to an active lifestyle, attributing his discipline partly to his wife, Keely. Several celebrities have recently relocated from California due to wildfire risks and property costs.
