The 30th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) commences on November 6, launching its 30th edition with the acclaimed film 'Ulya'. This co-production, drawing inspiration from the life of the legendary Latvian basketball player Uljana Semjonova, has already garnered attention at the Cannes Film Festival.
'Ulya' chronicles the journey of its protagonist from a secluded community into the demanding world of professional sports, navigating fame and athletic challenges. Directed by Viesturs Kairišs, the film is also officially Latvia's submission for the best international feature film category at the 2027 Academy Awards.
This year's festival will feature a special 'Focus: Baltics' program, placing Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian cinema center stage. The opening ceremony itself will commemorate PÖFF's three decades with an anniversary performance and a musical tribute to Baltic film scores, performed by pianists from each country.
Attendees will also witness the presentation of PÖFF's Lifetime Achievement Awards and the Bruno O'Ya Young Actor Scholarship. The festival will continue its screenings and events through November 22, celebrating a significant anniversary and the vibrant cinema of the Baltic region.
