Peter Readman, a distinguished City investment adviser and co-founder of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (COE), has passed away at the age of 79. His life was marked by a unique fusion of financial acumen and a profound passion for music.
The genesis of the COE occurred in 1980 when Readman and his wife Victoria were inspired by a performance of the European Community Youth Orchestra. Following this, they were approached with the idea of forming a new ensemble for musicians aging out of the youth orchestra.
Readman initially hesitated but was persuaded by his wife to pursue the venture. In May 1981, he brought together musicians from across Europe, organizing rehearsals in London. His innovative approach included early fundraising concerts, notably at Merchant Taylors' Hall, which quickly secured substantial sponsorship.
These early successes paved the way for the COE's establishment. The orchestra soon performed internationally under renowned conductors. Readman remained chairman of the COE until his death, championing its independent spirit and private funding model.
Born in Manchester in 1946, Readman had a diverse background, studying law at Cambridge and later earning an MBA from Insead. He contributed to economic analysis, co-authoring a book on European monetary union and advising major corporations. His public service included roles at the University of Cambridge and The National Churches Trust.
