Son Cried Over Oscar Win Misunderstanding
14 May
Summary
- Peter Jackson's young son misunderstood an Oscar win announcement.
- He thought 'clean sweep' was a movie title and cried.
- Steven Spielberg later apologized to Jackson for making his son cry.

Filmmaker Peter Jackson shared an amusing anecdote from the 2004 Academy Awards at a recent Cannes Film Festival event. His son, Billy, then about six or seven years old, was watching the ceremony from New Zealand.
When Steven Spielberg announced a 'clean sweep' for a Best Picture win, Billy mistook the phrase for a movie title. This misunderstanding led the young boy to burst into tears, believing he had missed watching this particular film.
Jackson later shared the story with Spielberg, who expressed sincere regret for inadvertently upsetting the child. Jackson's film, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, achieved a remarkable clean sweep that night, winning all 11 awards it was nominated for, including Best Picture.
Jackson also mentioned that all three of his Lord of the Rings films received Oscar wins. His wife, Fran Walsh, was a co-writer on the trilogy, and their children, Billy and Katie, had small roles in the movies. Recently, Jackson received an honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes from Elijah Wood.
