Mescal Eyes Collins Role, Praises Neeson's Portrayal

Actor Paul Mescal revealed his ambition to one day embody the Irish historical figure Michael Collins, acknowledging Liam Neeson's acclaimed portrayal. Mescal is currently garnering attention for his role as William Shakespeare in the recently premiered film 'Hamnet.' The movie focuses on the life of Shakespeare and his wife, Agnes, and the impact of their son's death.

Jessie Buckley, Mescal's co-star in 'Hamnet,' has also earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance as Agnes. Buckley described the film as a deeply personal project and praised the cast and crew for creating a family-like atmosphere on set. The film's critical success mirrors that of Maggie O'Farrell's novel, which O'Farrell herself found astonishing.

Director Chloë Zhao, who co-wrote the screenplay, noted the significant Irish presence among the cast. Zhao, an Oscar winner for 'Nomadland,' expressed interest in exploring older Irish narratives in future projects and has shown an affinity for Celtic culture. 'Hamnet' is scheduled for release in Irish and British cinemas on January 9.
