Summary
- Paul Cauthen discussed Beyoncé's interest in his music.
- Producers for the pop star approached him for songs.
- His songs did not make Cowboy Carter but appeared on his album.

Singer-songwriter Paul Cauthen, also known as "Big Velvet," recently shared how pop superstar Beyoncé sought material for her 2024 album, Cowboy Carter. Cauthen explained on a podcast that Beyoncé's team discovered his music through a former high school acquaintance working for the singer's family.
Producers from Beyoncé's camp visited Cauthen in California, expressing interest in his work. This led Cauthen and his collaborator Beau Bedford to shift their focus, writing songs tailored for a major pop artist. They infused his signature style with a pop-centric edge, creating a new creative space for Cauthen.
Although none of the songs written for the project ultimately appeared on Cowboy Carter, Cauthen expressed understanding of the competitive nature of music. He noted that some of these unreleased tracks found a home on his own 2024 album, Black on Black, allowing his music to still see the light of day.
