- The project involves laying new rails and installing eco-friendly electric engines.
Preparations are accelerating at Patna Zoo to reintroduce the beloved toy train, known as Shishu Rail, in a completely modernized, electric form. The original narrow-gauge track, which suffered from safety concerns due to worn-out wooden sleepers, is currently being removed and replaced.
The revamped service is targeted to become operational by January 2027, nearly a decade after its previous run ceased in August 2015. The redevelopment includes laying new rails, installing pre-stressed concrete sleepers, and improving bridges, with an estimated project cost of around Rs 15 crore.
The new toy train will feature four modern, eco-friendly coaches with a capacity for 80 to 120 passengers. A full ride is anticipated to take 15 to 20 minutes, offering visitors a scenic journey past various animal enclosures and attractions.
Efforts are underway to minimize the train's impact on wildlife, including soundproofing enclosures. The project, a collaboration between the zoo and the Danapur railway division, aims to revive a major attraction that has been missed by families and children.
