Passion of the Christ Returns: Sequel Teased

Mel Gibson's 2004 film "The Passion of the Christ" is returning to theaters nationwide for a limited engagement from September 10 to 17. This special re-release features a new 4K remaster of the original camera negative, enhanced with Dolby Atmos sound. Tickets for this engagement will be available starting July 24.

Attendees of the re-release will also be treated to an exclusive sneak peek of Gibson's upcoming sequel, "The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One." This highly anticipated follow-up is scheduled for release in 2027 and will explore the Resurrection and its subsequent events. Notably, Jim Caviezel will not be reprising his role as Jesus, with a new cast being assembled for this ambitious two-part project.

The original "The Passion of the Christ," produced on a $30 million budget, achieved significant commercial success, grossing over $610 million worldwide. It depicted the final 12 hours of Jesus Christ's life using dialogue primarily in Aramaic and Latin. During its production, the cast and crew reported several unusual incidents, including Jim Caviezel being struck by lightning and suffering injuries. Similar reports of spiritual opposition and accidents have emerged during the sequel's filming.

Gibson's sequel is described as his most ambitious undertaking to date. While the original film centered on the Passion, the new films will delve into the Resurrection and its aftermath. The re-release seeks to bring this significant faith-based cinematic milestone back to the big screen for a new generation.
