17 Apr
Summary
- Paramount pledges minimum of 30 films across combined studios.
- New releases will stay exclusive to theaters for at least 45 days.
- Industry players express concerns over potential negative impacts of merger.

Paramount Pictures is making a concerted effort to gain Hollywood's backing for its proposed $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. During a movie theater convention, David Ellison, who recently took control of Paramount, announced plans to release at least 30 films across both studios if the merger is approved. This commitment aims to reassure the film community, which has expressed skepticism regarding the deal.
Ellison emphasized the strategic importance of the theatrical model, pledging that new Paramount films will maintain an exclusive 45-day theatrical run before becoming available on streaming services. Paramount's co-chiefs also unveiled a slate heavy on franchise films and remakes, including sequels to "Top Gun: Maverick" and new installments of "Paw Patrol" and "Sonic the Hedgehog." Upcoming projects also feature adaptations from video games like "Call of Duty" and "Street Fighter."
Despite the assurances and a star-studded promotional film, many theater owners remain apprehensive. They recall similar promises made by Disney during its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which resulted in a significant reduction in film releases. A growing number of industry professionals, including prominent directors, have also voiced opposition to the merger, citing concerns about further harming the already struggling Hollywood industry.
