James Gray's latest crime drama, "Paper Tiger," featuring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, is set to make its North American debut. It will serve as the opening night film for the 64th New York Film Festival on September 25. This marks Gray's fourth directorial work to be presented at the festival.
The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to a strong reception, is set in 1986. It tells the story of brothers Irwin (Miles Teller) and Gary Pearl (Driver). Irwin becomes involved with the Russian mob due to a scheme to clean the Gowanus Canal. His brother, a former police officer, is the only one who can help him.
"Paper Tiger" joins a roster of notable films that have previously opened the New York Film Festival. Over the years, 13 opening night selections have received Academy Award nominations for best picture, with one ultimately winning the top prize. Gray expressed his gratitude for returning to the festival, calling the film deeply personal and rooted in New York City.
Gray and members of the cast and crew are expected to attend the screening. Single tickets for the NYFF will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, September 15, with earlier presale access for festival members and pass holders. Additional festival selections will be announced soon.
