Season 2 of The Paper delves into the complicated romantic entanglements at the Toledo Truth Teller, focusing on several key relationships. The central romance between editor-in-chief Ned Sampson and reporter Mare Pritti begins as a secret affair, fraught with the challenges of workplace relationships and trust issues, culminating in Mare's temporary departure for Cincinnati and an uncertain future.
Another significant storyline involves advertising rep Detrick Moore and the ambitious Nicole Lee. Their initially unhinged quasi-romance, evolving from a casual arrangement, faces complications with Detrick's flirtation with HR rep Lisa Graysh and Nicole's own guarded nature. Both actors express hope for clearer alignment and growth in their characters' relationship.
The most unexpected pairing is between accountant Adelola Olofin and salesman-turned-photographer Travis Bienlien. Their antagonistic relationship from season 1 transforms into palpable tension following a dramatic tornado chase, leading to a physically suggestive accidental encounter. This development surprised creators, who noted the trope of enemies-to-lovers in romantic comedies.
Other relationships explored include managing editor Esmeralda Grand exploiting Ken Davies' crush for personal gain and accountant Adam Cooper's steadfast commitment to his wife, Summer. Eccentric reporter Barry remains without an on-screen partner but frequently mentions his wife, Roxanne.
