- This listing makes Paolozzi's murals the first by the artist to be nationally listed.
Sir Eduardo Paolozzi's significant "pop art" mural, located in Milward Square within the Kingfisher shopping centre in Redditch, has officially achieved Grade II listed status. Unveiled in 1983, the artwork features 12 mosaic panels that artfully collage images representing the profound impact of Redditch's historical needle industry.
Historic England recommended the listing, citing the mural's exceptional quality, craftsmanship, and enduring survival. Paolozzi, a key figure in the pop art movement, was commissioned to create a piece reflecting Redditch's primary industrial base. Funding for this celebrated work came from several notable organizations, including the Arts Council of Great Britain.
The Grade II listing signifies that the mural is considered of special architectural or historic interest, imposing stricter controls on any future alterations. This designation is particularly noteworthy, as it marks the first time any of Sir Eduardo Paolozzi's murals have received national listing. It also places the Kingfisher shopping centre's artwork among a select few post-war shopping centers to gain such protected status.
Management at the Kingfisher centre expressed their pleasure at the recognition, describing the mosaics as a beloved feature and an integral part of the centre's cultural identity and Redditch's heritage. Efforts are underway in collaboration with the borough council to ensure the mural's preservation for future generations, with recent conservation work already completed.
