Eshah Shakeel's upcoming drama, "Dancers," centers on two young protagonists in a Pakistani town near Lahore. The film explores the poignant tension experienced by Pakistani youth, balancing the urge to emigrate with an emotional attachment to their roots. This internal conflict is embodied by Paras, who dreams of leaving, and Ramza, who navigates an arranged marriage and questions her identity.
Shakeel, who pursued dance and acting in secret against her family's wishes, plans to fuse contemporary dance with traditional Punjabi forms. This artistic expression will allow the characters to convey emotions they cannot voice openly. The project, developed through Film Independent's Global Media Makers program, has finalized its script and budget of approximately $443,000.
"Dancers" is currently being presented at the Asian Project Market, part of the Busan International Film Festival. The filmmakers are actively seeking investors, co-production partners, and sales agents. Producer Haris Khan highlighted the project's momentum, while producer Iram Parveen Bilal emphasized the goal of securing co-producers to expand distribution opportunities. Last Shot, Shakeel's production company, focuses on stories by and about women, aiming to consistently bring socially urgent South Asian narratives to the global stage.
