New Cartoon Empowers Autistic Kids in School

A new animated comedy series, Pablo: Next Level, is set to empower children by showcasing an autistic lead character as he begins primary school. Produced by Belfast's Paper Owl Films and Crayola Studios, the spin-off from the pre-school series Pablo features an eight-year-old autistic boy named Pablo. He navigates mainstream school life with the aid of his sketchpad and book animal friends, offering an authentic voice to the autistic experience.

The series stars 11-year-old Alexander Myles, who also has autism, portraying Pablo. He shared that the character's struggles, such as sensory sensitivities and social interactions, will resonate with other autistic children. The show also highlights characters with other needs, like Mylo in a wheelchair and Eoin with dyslexia, promoting empathy.

Pablo: Next Level aims to help children understand different minds and engage with each other, presenting a comedic yet accurate glimpse into life as an early-schooler with autism. In Northern Ireland, 5.9% of school-aged children have autism, and research indicates these children often face more exclusion and bullying. The creators hope the series, which took six years to develop, will inspire societal change towards greater understanding and inclusivity.

Gráinne McGuinness, Creative Director at Paper Owl Films, stated that viewing the world through Pablo's eyes can reveal challenges autistic children face and how small changes can make a significant difference. The show is designed to be funny, lowering barriers and encouraging acceptance. Pablo: Next Level premieres on 7 September 2026 on CBBC, BBC iPlayer, and RTÉ Kids.
