Overwatch Director's Shocking Reason for Leaving
12 Mar
Summary
- Director left due to immense pressure for profits.
- Overwatch League's financial promises fell short.
- Sequel's PVE vision was sacrificed for monetization.

Jeff Kaplan, who led the development of Overwatch for 19 years at Blizzard, departed the company in 2021 due to overwhelming corporate pressure for profits. Initially, Kaplan aimed to focus Overwatch's post-launch support on world events and updates. However, the burgeoning hype around the Overwatch League, which Activision Blizzard heavily promoted, diverted significant team resources and attention.
The ambitious Overwatch League, with teams sold for millions, ultimately failed to deliver on projected revenues, reportedly falling far short of the $125 million initially forecast. This financial shortfall led to increased pressure to boost revenue through in-game microtransactions, diverting resources from new content development. Kaplan described the league as a "house of cards" and an "albatross."
Furthermore, the development of Overwatch 2 was significantly impacted. Kaplan's original vision for a robust PVE component to complement the PVP mode was overshadowed by demands for ever-increasing profits, especially following the original game's $1 billion first-year revenue. This pressure intensified when Kaplan was directly confronted with aggressive revenue targets and the threat of layoffs.
Kaplan stated that the experience "broke" him, leading to his painful separation from Blizzard. He expressed a desire for game developers to recognize their value and not yield creative control to those who may not fully appreciate it.
