Outfest Roars Back: LA Queer Film Fest Finds New Life
30 Jul
Summary
- Outfest returned with a scaled-down, four-day festival after financial and legal troubles.
- Screenings at the Renberg Theatre sold out, showing strong community demand.
- A new board is rebuilding the organization with a focus on transparent financials.

Outfest recently held a four-day festival from July 23-26, marking its strategic return after a significant hiatus. This event featured over 30 films and shorts, including premieres like "The Brittney Griner Story," at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Renberg Theatre. The scaled-down format follows a period of financial instability and organizational restructuring.
Despite past challenges, screenings at the 183-seat Renberg Theatre saw sold-out crowds and active community engagement. Interim executive director Christopher Racster described the situation as an "unfortunate opportunity" that forced the organization to adapt. A new board, appointed last September and led by president Lucas Bailey, is now focused on financial transparency and building a sustainable business model.
Racster aims to host OutfestNEXT twice a year and expand its scope to support emerging filmmakers. The organization also plans to re-engage with corporate partners and develop educational programs, such as a producers lab and the return of Outfest Fusion, to foster long-term careers for storytellers in the evolving industry.
