The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences plans to significantly expand the number of film festivals that can automatically qualify entries for the International Feature Film Oscar. AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer announced this initiative at the Tokyo Film Festival, highlighting a commitment to globalizing the prestigious category.
Currently, films winning top awards at six major international festivals—Berlin, Busan, Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, and Venice—are eligible. Kramer indicated that the Academy is actively engaging with festivals worldwide to broaden this selection process, aiming for more comprehensive global representation.
This initiative follows earlier steps to increase inclusivity, such as allowing refugee filmmakers' submissions. Kramer also noted that 25% of Academy membership now resides outside the U.S., reflecting shifts in global film production and consumption.
Furthermore, the Academy announced its upcoming move to YouTube for broadcasting the Oscars, beginning in 2029. This partnership offers a global reach across more than 30 languages and ensures greater control over fan engagement and broadcast quality, aligning with the evolving media landscape.
The partnership with YouTube is part of a broader trend where streaming platforms are increasingly hosting live events, with Netflix and Prime Video also securing rights for other major awards. The Academy and YouTube have affirmed a commitment to free expression, with no censorship allowed on the Oscar broadcast.
