- Several top film categories lack a clear frontrunner this year.
- Industry unease over sales and AI looms over the glamorous event.
The annual Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, promising a red-carpet event marked by intense drama in its major award races.
"One Battle After Another," starring Leonardo DiCaprio, had been considered a frontrunner for best picture, but a late surge from "Sinners," a film celebrating blues music and Black culture, has intensified the competition. "Sinners" leads with a record 16 nominations.
Jessie Buckley is widely expected to win best actress, but other top categories remain highly unpredictable, a rarity for the Oscars. Michael B. Jordan, Timothee Chalamet, and Wagner Moura are contenders for best actor, while supporting actor and actress categories feature a wide range of nominees.
The ceremony celebrates Hollywood amidst industry-wide unease, with major studios undergoing sales and concerns over artificial intelligence impacting job opportunities and creative risks.
Comedian Conan O'Brien will host the event, which will be broadcast live and streamed. The show aims to reflect the growing presence of international films, with each category featuring at least one non-English-language nominee.
