The biographical drama "Rose Pandanwangi," an Indonesia-Philippines co-production, has secured Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell, celebrated for his work on "Wicked." Directed by Razka Robby Ertanto, the film delves into the life of Rose Pandanwangi, a prominent seriosa singer in post-war Indonesia. The project was notably selected for the JAFF Future Project, highlighting its potential.
The narrative follows Rose's journey from wartime Makassar, where her voice captivated audiences, through her exile in the Netherlands, and back to Jakarta. It explores her rise from factory worker to national icon, balancing artistic ambition with motherhood amidst a turbulent national landscape. The film also touches upon her complex relationships and artistic connections, particularly with painter Sudjojono.
Director Ertanto expressed his deep personal connection to Rose's story, viewing it as a crucial yet overlooked piece of history.
