The film's premiere at the Venice Film Festival garnered a remarkable 23-minute standing ovation, leading to its Silver Lion win. Tunisia's entry has now been nominated for the Best International Film Oscar, marking a significant achievement for Arab cinema.
Kaouther Ben Hania, an acclaimed filmmaker with two previous Oscar nominations, uses a blend of documentary and narrative techniques. This film is the sole Arab film nominated this year and the only international nominee directed by a woman, highlighting its unique position.
The director collaborated with Hind Rajab's mother to obtain permission for using her daughter's recordings. Ben Hania meticulously recreated the scenes with the Red Crescent, ensuring they seamlessly integrated with the actual audio. The project also received support from notable filmmakers, including executive producers Brad Pitt and Alfonso Cuaron.
Despite challenges in distribution due to the controversy surrounding the war in Gaza, the film has found its way into theaters, amplifying Hind Rajab's voice worldwide, as the director intended.
