The Oscar-shortlisted short film "Extremist" is being adapted into a feature-length production, spearheaded by arthouse stalwart Alexander Rodnyansky and his AR Content banner. Rodnyansky is collaborating with Alexander Molochnikov, who directed the original short, and Forma Pro Films on the feature adaptation. The short film previously premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival and garnered awards at the 2025 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards, later securing an Oscar shortlist nomination for Best Live Action Short in 2026.
The feature will delve deeper into the narrative, presenting three distinct viewpoints drawn from the actual experiences of Russian citizens since the commencement of the war in Ukraine. The original short centered on a young Russian artist who faced a potential ten-year prison sentence for altering food labels with pacifist messages in a Moscow supermarket.
Rodnyansky expressed his personal connection to the project, citing his own in-absentia prison sentence in Russia for speaking out against the war. He praised Molochnikov's talent and the professionalism of Forma Pro Films. Molochnikov described the feature as an exploration of "heroic people who chose to remain human while risking their freedom and their lives," weaving together three stories of escape through protest, art, and physical departure.
Svetlana Punte of Forma Pro Films highlighted Rodnyansky's instinct for talent and Molochnikov's extraordinary dedication. Molochnikov's previous films have been showcased at notable festivals such as the Moscow International Film Festival and the Seattle International Film Festival.
