- The building features 144 dimmable triangular glass panes.
- It is the last project by architect Oscar Niemeyer, conceived at 103.

The Niemeyer Sphere, the final design of acclaimed Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, stands as a remarkable testament to his vision. Niemeyer conceived this 12-meter diameter white sphere at the age of 103, just before his passing in 2012.
The project, located in an industrial neighborhood of Leipzig, Germany, saw its inauguration in June 2020. The journey from its conception in 1994 to its opening took over two decades, involving entrepreneur Ludwig Koehne and executive architect Harald Kern.
A significant feature of the Sphere is its innovative facade, comprising 144 triangular liquid crystal glass panes. Developed by Merck, these panes can be dimmed from soft gray to nearly black, offering an 'invisible shading' solution and a unique visual experience.
Internally, the Sphere is divided into three levels, with the middle floor housing a bar and the top floor offering a lounge with designer chairs. The design emphasizes Niemeyer's signature use of curves and his belief in integrating technology with art and beauty.
Complementing the Sphere, the factory complex hosts art galleries, including an exhibition of photographer Margret Hoppe's work documenting the Sphere's construction. The venue also occasionally features outdoor concerts and has hosted performances, such as a Bach cello suite.
